Location and Context
Situated on Tripoli University Road, "Doshma" occupies a prime location that bridges the historic old city, modern residential districts, and the university complex. The name "Doshma," derived from the term used to describe fortified structures for safeguarding valuables, is reinterpreted in this project to symbolize the protection of creativity and ideas rather than military assets. This transformation aligns with the city's cultural evolution, creating a space dedicated to artistic expression and community engagement.

Architectural Concept
"Doshma" is a minimalist yet innovative design that pays homage to traditional architectural forms such as the arch and vault, while incorporating contemporary elements. It reflects a transition from a conflicted past to a hopeful future centered on art and culture. Key architectural elements include:

Reflective Glass Façade:

  • Mirrors the vibrant life of the community during the day.
  • Reveals the inner workings of the space at night, symbolizing openness and transparency.

Unified Roof:

  • A single cohesive structure envelops the building, ensuring visual harmony and spatial efficiency.

Repurposed Shipping Container:

  • Housed within the structure, it provides essential services like the kitchen and restrooms, showcasing sustainability and adaptability.

Functional Program
Spanning a compact yet functional 222 square meters, "Doshma" is designed as a flexible, multipurpose venue that fosters a variety of cultural and artistic activities. The program includes:

Ground Floor:

  • Main gallery spaces for art exhibitions and interactive displays.
  • Reception and essential services.

Upper Gallery:

  • A versatile platform for intimate cultural performances, workshops, and educational programs.

This adaptable design ensures the space can accommodate the changing needs of the community.

Cultural and Social Impact
"Doshma" stands as a symbol of Tripoli’s cultural rebirth, particularly in the wake of the Libyan revolution. Its design transforms a struggle for freedom into a celebration of art, offering:

  • Platform for Artists: A supportive space for young artists to showcase their work and connect with a broader audience.
  • Cultural Exchange: A hub for community engagement, fostering connections between diverse cultural groups.
  • Social Transformation: By combining architecture and art, "Doshma" highlights the role of design in driving meaningful social change.

The project has earned recognition both nationally and internationally, serving as an inspiration for sustainable and community-focused architectural design.

Materials and Technology
The construction of "Doshma" leverages local resources and innovative techniques:

Materials:

  • Locally sourced concrete, glass, and steel.
  • Use of a repurposed shipping container for essential services enhances sustainability.

Construction:

  • On-site assembly of components minimizes costs and ensures replicability.
  • The reflective glass façade provides both aesthetic appeal and functional advantages by managing natural light and energy efficiency.

Outcomes
"Doshma" has quickly become a cultural and architectural landmark in Tripoli, embodying:

  • Modern Design with Local Identity: A seamless blend of contemporary architectural aesthetics and cultural heritage.
  • Sustainability: A design that demonstrates cost-effectiveness and environmental responsibility.
  • Community Focus: A vibrant gathering space that strengthens cultural awareness and creativity.

"Doshma" exemplifies how thoughtful architectural design can support cultural transformation, fostering creativity and community engagement in the heart of Tripoli. Its innovative use of materials, flexible program, and cultural significance make it a model for sustainable and impactful design in Libya and beyond.
