Marhaba Cultural Center: A Beacon of Creativity in Nouakchott
Introduction
The Marhaba Cultural Center, situated in the heart of Nouakchott, Mauritania, embodies a synthesis of architectural innovation and cultural dynamism. Spanning a modest site of 433 square meters with a total built-up area of 739 square meters, the center addresses the city’s burgeoning need for cultural spaces, offering a versatile platform for artistic and communal expression. Designed by Muftah Design, the project seamlessly integrates functional efficiency with environmental and cultural sensitivity.

Architectural Vision and Design Philosophy
At its core, the Marhaba Cultural Center is conceived as a space for creativity, leveraging repurposed shipping containers to construct an architecture that narrates stories of resilience, mobility, and sustainability. These containers form the structural and aesthetic foundation, creating a juxtaposition between industrial materials and local traditions.

Key Features:

  • Innovative Use of Materials:
Shipping containers are arranged to provide dynamic spatial experiences. Their weathered surfaces, emblematic of journeys across oceans, are a testament to resilience and reuse.
  • Climate Responsive Design:
Equipped with a piping system linked to an underground reservoir, the center employs passive cooling and heating techniques, reflecting an environmentally conscious design ethos.
  • Flexible Interior Layouts:
The adaptability of internal spaces allows the building to serve diverse cultural and artistic activities, ranging from exhibitions to performances and workshops.

Spatial Organization
The spatial composition of the center emphasizes connectivity and accessibility. A central gathering space acts as the nucleus, facilitating seamless interaction with adjacent functional zones.

Ground Floor:

  • Multi-purpose hall
  • Recording studio
  • Workshop spaces
  • Retail shop
  • Service areas including a kitchen and restrooms

First Floor:

  • Art gallery
  • Office spaces
  • Residential units for visiting artists

Rooftop:

  • Open café and restaurant
  • Panoramic terrace with views of the Atlantic Ocean
  • Radio station

Integration with Context
The Marhaba Cultural Center is deeply embedded within its urban and cultural milieu. By utilizing containers, the project celebrates Mauritania’s trade heritage, while its spatial flexibility responds to the evolving needs of the community. The design encourages a dialogue between privacy and interaction, with modular elements that adapt to various uses and user groups.

Environmental and Social Impact
The project transcends its physical form to become a catalyst for social engagement and cultural enrichment. By fostering a space where art meets the public realm, it elevates local talent and strengthens communal ties. The sustainable approach underscores the importance of resourcefulness, setting an example for future architectural endeavors in Mauritania.

Conclusion
Marhaba Cultural Center is a landmark in sustainable and culturally resonant architecture. As a venue for fostering artistic and social interaction, it stands as a testimony to the transformative power of design. With its commitment to community, environment, and innovation, the center positions itself as a prototype for cultural spaces in the region.
